Ice Climbing Instruction
Learn to ice climb in the Ouray Ice Park or the Lake City park
Join us for a trip to the World-Famous Ouray Ice Park. Ice Climbing put Ouray on the map and their new Ice Park is a great, user-friendly area with an abundance of ice for all abilities and levels. Ouray has become a destination for ice enthusiasts and attracts climbers from all over the world in the winter to ascend it's notable routes.
Whether going for a day in the park to learn the beginning basics of ice climbing, or wanting a multiple day, intensive teaching progression looking to improve upon skills and climbing efficiency, we can offer you a fun, safe, and professional experience with our AMGA trained & certified guides
Come join us for a unique and exhilarating experience climbing a frozen waterfall. Our certified guides will provide the equipment and teach you the basics of ice climbing techniques, belaying, rappelling, and safe climbing procedures. Come for two or three days, or customize your own trip. We will progress to steeper ice with the opportunities to learn about lead climbing, ice protection, ice anchors, and the possibility of climbing a multi-pitch waterfall. We offer trips at both the Lake City and the Ouray Ice Parks. Lake City offers a rugged yet humble ice park right in town. Created by a local band of climbers, the Lake City park offers a variety of routes and pitches for climbers of any or little experience. If you've never visited Lake City, a day of ice climbing there is something you'll never forget in this gem of a town in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. The world famous Ouray Ice Park is in a truly spectacular setting in the Uncompaghre Gorge with easy access and endless amounts of ice to climb. The Ouray Ice Park offers hundreds of climbs from beginners to expert all within a five minute walk. The Ouray Ice Park was opened in 1995 as the world’s first ice climbing park and is a destination for world class ice climbers. We are able to accommodate any skill level of climbing whether it be your first day in a harness, a background in rock climbing, or an ice climber just looking to ramp up their skill set.
After arriving at one of the Ice Parks, meeting your guide, you will get about a 5 hour class in ice climbing. You guide will teach or review, (depending on your knowledge) the basics of ice climbing skills including basic knots, crampon use and ice tool use.
What to wear?
Wear warm clothing for being outdoors in winter weather. Warm clothes—no cotton. Long underwear with shell pants and either soft shell or hard shell jacket with a couple layers of either wool or capilene (or fleece—whatever). You do get warm when you are climbing, but once you are off the ropes, you want to make sure you have enough clothes to be comfortable. A down jacket or heavy insulated jacket is nice to have when you are not climbing. Bring an extra set of comfortable clothes for the car ride home. Your boots need to be Insulated and crampon compatible. Crested Butte Mountain Guides has a limited number of ice climbing boots, please call to arrange for boots.
Lunch is not included. You will need a lunch and water for the day.
Ouray offers world class ice climbing and a place to push your limits if you have a basic understanding of ice climbing, and Lake City is a great place to get your feet wet in a low-key setting.
There is not a minimum age for this trip, but all participants must be prepared to climb ice and spend the day out in the mountains.
Upon meeting up with the guide
Your guide will go over equipment and gear to make sure everyone has what they need. Your guide will also go over the finer points of climbing ice.
