Colorado River Fruita Class I-II
This spectacular canyon country of the Colorado Plateau, including Ruby and Horsethief Canyons, features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best Colorado canoeing and Colorado sea kayaking. The river is gentle with occasional small Class I+ rapids to add spice to the journey. Roads do not bound this portion of the river and the steep-walled canyons are accessible only from the river, giving the area a true wilderness setting.
You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your lifejacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock, called Black Rock. Camping along the river’s banks, exploring a natural amphitheater with ancient Indian rock art or hiking into deep box canyons will leave you awed by the immensity of geologic time and the silence of the wilderness. This is BIG COUNTRY and a geologist’s paradise. Many of our educational classes focus on this area. This stretch of river near Grand Junction, CO, can accommodate either a canoe trip or sea kayak trip.

Join Colorado’s own "Cleason-Dunn-Wright" for great harmonies, excellent guitar playing and tons of popular sing-along-songs. Enjoy a private concert with 4 decades of music around the campfire. What could be better?! A lone guitar under the stars and the crackle of the campfire seem to be magical. Plus, our guests are always been encouraged to join in the sing-a-longs or bring their favorite instrument.
Family Canoe Trips
This year your guides will engage the kids in a variety of games giving parents a "break from the action." Well okay, I guess the parents can play too. Your guides will facilitate games that can be played on the river and while in camp such as Dead Fish Polo, Scavenger Hunt, Do It In Under A Minute, etc. Renew your relationship with the kids this summer away from TVs and computer games while viewing wildlife, stargazing and, of course, roasting marshmallows around the campfire. Gain a whole new sense of “family” while enjoying the outdoors together. This is also a great opportunity to invite grandparents so they can bond with the kids too!
Day 1: Meet your guide staff at the designated put-in in Fruita for 3 day trips or Fruita for 2 day trips, CO, just west of Grand Junction and enjoy a continental breakfast before packing your dry bags and loading the gear in the canoes.
Two day trips run a car shuttle to the Westwater Ranger Station take-out and then return to the put-in. Three day trips, the price includes the shuttle from the take out back to the put-in. At the put in you will recieve a safety talk and paddling instructions before launching. Shortly after launching, you will begin paddling past the towering red sandstone walls of Horsetheif Canyon.
Paddle downriver until approximately noon and enjoy lunch on the rivers edge maybe catching a glimpse of an eagle or a desert sheep.
After lunch continue paddling until roughly 3 p.m. and make camp near the ancient walls of Mee Canyon (depending on campsite availability).
Late afternoon on the first day is devoted to setting up your tent and possibly taking a short hike or relaxing, playing, or floating in the river.
Happy Hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and shrimp, cheese, crackers and wine are served.
Dinner is served around 7 p.m. followed by campfire activities that may include games, singing, western tall tales, or guitar playing.
Day 2: The middle day will oftentimes be a layover day devoted to hiking the canyons, playing in the river, and/or relaxing in camp. Many times lunches will be packed for the hike where you can explore multi-million year old canyons. However, your guides may choose to move downriver on the second day. Factors that influence this decision are weather, pace of the group, campsite availability, etc.
Day 3: We will break down camp after a hearty breakfast and paddle through the majestic Ruby Canyon and Black Rocks known to have 2 billion year old rock formations and a small rapid (Class I). There may be an opportunity to float through Black Rocks enjoying the ride through the ripples and bubbles.
We typically reach the Westwater Ranger Station takeout between 2-3 p.m. on the last day of the trip allowing time to drive home.
